Tuesday 3rd November 2020:

Discussion/Rehearsal:

“Hallelujah”:

Ben was self isolating which led him to accidentally learning the wrong chords of Hallelujah, but managed to learn the same one from the help of our pianist Anthony and our teacher Simon.

Julia is the main vocalist in the song there will be some harmony accompaniment of  other vocalist. (Knows the lyrics)

Anthony knows the chords feels confident

“Selfish”:

Liliana is the main vocalist of the song. Suggested that we can add some breathy harmonies on the Chorus from:

Shouldn't love you, but I couldn't help it

Had a feeling that you never felt it

I always knew that you were too damn selfish

Don't know why I looked the other way

I wanted you to change, yeah

I shouldn't love you, but I couldn't help it

I always knew that you were too damn selfish”

Anthony’s knowledge of the chords is that he doesn’t know it by heart but he is reading it off from a website.

Ben hasn’t learnt the chords to the song however is practicing/learning from the teacher who helped to play the song during the practice.

George experimenting:

George told to the group that he had a audition for a summer cabaret which didn’t happen because of the pandemic but said which song he did:

“That’s life”-Frank Sinatra

He then got suggested to sing this song:

“Fly me to the moon”-Frank Sinatra

The rehearsal of George practicing to sing these songs went incredibly well and the teacher was able to get a sense of what his range is.

Our teacher decided that we should attempt practicing the song and see how well it goes, which has it developed we discovered that they was a hidden duo. (TBC)

Tuesday 10th November 2020:

Target:

  • Learn the lyrics of a verse and chorus (aka: cheat sheets).
  • Dan’s motivational speech moment.
  • To be able to improve/practice songs.
  • Focus on songs that don’t need backing track.

Rehearsal:

Hallelujah:

We rehearsed the song today with no delays or interruptions and with some backing vocal accompaniment.

Anthony (pianist) also knows and played the chord progression by heart with Ben (guitarist) who also knows the chords very well.

Julia (vocalist) Particularly when singing the higher pitch sections of the song, the overall performance of the vocalist was amazing and confident and continued to improve beautifully during rehearsals.

Selfish:

The pianist struggled to grasp the idea of how to play it while learning the chord progressions of the song, the guitarist is still lost and trying to research how to play the chords because they didn't know what the chords were.

The pianist and guitarist were able to develop a bit of an understanding of how to play the song slowly after a few minutes of trying to find the chords for the song, and eventually they were able to play the whole song roughly.

The vocalist was complimented on how wonderful they performed. And Liliana the main vocalist suggested that she should work on where to place her breaths by looking at breathing techniques.

Chord Progression:

The image below shows the beginning process of the pianist and guitarist trying to figure out the correct order of the chord Progression for the song:

Afterwards they had a little practice which then revealed a little error in the chord format which then lead the pianist and guitarist to then further correct the mistakes:
Then a little more correct addition:

We didn’t have great access to computers so they had to try and find what the chord progression. There was confusion between the pre-chorus and the intro when playing the song on the piano and guitar.

Tuesday 17th November 2020:

Due to the unfortunate absent of our music teacher being ill we as a group decided that we would focus on our time management since each rehearsal we aren't able to practice most of the songs since we don't pay much attention on time, another thing to include was ensuring that we aim to start each rehearsal with a warm up is that each singers and instrument players don't suffer any injuries.

Future Plans:

Anthony and Ben need to rehearse the chord progression for 'Selfish'.
Julia needs to practice 'Skinny Love' throughout and also 'For Good' with Liliana.
Practice all of George's songs.
Practice 'Lay me down' by Sam smith for Kellie.

Wednesday 18th November 2020:

During this rehearsal we went through a variety of songs such as:

"Fly me to the moon":

George really benefited from this rehearsal because it has been a while since he rehearsed all of his songs due to the lack of time control of how many minutes should be spent on each song. But the overall success of the song was really strong for George, the factors he needs to work on so that projection, learning the lyrics and pitching will be able to achieve his goal next time.

Our teacher provided some input that indicated that he might try to adjust the sound by trying a falsetto.

“Lay me down”:

Kellie has shown a sense of change as she struggled with some confidence problem at the beginning, but she managed to at least practise singing in front of the ensemble group and gain some input from her peers and teachers.

As Julia suggested during the practise of singing through the song, Kellie was to belt the chorus portion so that it would produce a better tone.

Our music teacher suggested that I keep the song as it gives everyone a chance to be involved and that it fits my singing voice.

“Selfish”:

Throughout the practise, Liliana clearly showed progress because she remembered the sections where the breathing technique was needed that helped her project her incredible voice to sing the higher pitch, and provided a sense of achievement from the goals of last week.

She continued to improve throughout the song and proved that she was really benefiting from the practise in class and outside college.

Her next aim is to be able to rehearse with Julia the song 'For Good' so that we can ensure it is in progress.

Keep practising 'Selfish' so that for the actual performance she is able to do it beautifully.

Tuesday 24th November 2020:

Lay me down:

-learn the lyrics

-practice on controlling the volume meaning be clear and audible so people understand what the lyrics are about.

Hallelujah/Skinny Love:

Throughout the whole practise we have had so far, Julia has improved on her vocals because yesterday she absolutely did great the higher pitch part of the song, only thing she got feedback on which she learned the lyrics to all the singers.

She also rehearsed another album, Skinny Love, where she performed it wonderfully in front of her peers, receiving feedback that it matches her voice tone, but at the end she just needs to have confidence and correct the riff.

For good:

The girls rehearsed the “For Good" duo song after a long period of time, which was well performed and the harmonies were beautifully sung. The only reaction is to focus harder on making the harmonies clearer and knowing the lyrics makes it more difficult for them to concentrate.

Goodnight n go:

After a while of performing it for a long time, Liliana rehearsed this song beautifully because it was suggested that she should do it for a solo because she has the confidence and great stage presence to perform it. Working on the higher pitch components and breathing is the only thing that she wants to work on. But the instructor said that the song suits her voice and with such enthusiasm she performs it.

Fly me to the moon:

The rehearsal of the song by George was an improvement as he has continued to demonstrate that he is following his teacher's advice about trying to adjust the pitch in the song to show his range.

Another thing George has shown is his growth of confidence, however he just needs to learn the lyrics.

Wednesday 25th November 2020:

Lay Me Down:

Kellie's music practise enhanced the sense of singing the whole song and having the song's right pitches/tone. However to enhance her overall performance, she needs to get over the nervous fear of performing in front of her class and instructor and needs to keep training.

Skinny Love:

Julia's rehearsals still display a great amount of progress and when she sings Skinny Love, she becomes much more optimistic as she genuinely sings the high pitch sections beautifully and is able to deliver a good and touching performance.

The only feedback is to have a vocal warm up that is much more successful, and to learn the lyrics.

For Good:

The rehearsal of the song For Good by Julia and Liliana was really eye-opening because the teacher reflected on the fact that when the harmonies take place, the chorus conflicts and they can work out how to smooth it out. But overall, their rehearsals have shown a real change, the harmonies are amazing and sung well next to the chorus section.

Goodnight n go:

She still manages to show such an overwhelming and awesome performance whenever Liliana performs this song. Yet she must continue to focus on breathing exercises and have enough stamina to sing the song's higher pitch components.

Fly me to the moon:

The instructor helped/assisted him during George's rehearsal to explain how and when he demonstrated how to hit the notes because he gave an example of how to reach certain notes.

He just needs to work with the voice in his brain, and he just needs to know the lyrics.

Ben’s rehearsal:

We agreed to let our guitarist have a solo jam session for him to practise whatever techniques or song he wanted to rehearse so that he could strengthen his chords knowledge so that he knows all the chords to play for each song next band rehearsal.

Tuesday 8th December 2020:

Assessment Next Week Tuesday:

Preparation for the exam is that we should rehearse is that we are gonna rehearse the songs that need accompaniment of the instruments first then after rehearse the songs that have backing tracks.

The singers must learn their lines for the performance and should make sure that they warmed up their voices before practicing.

The pianist and guitarist need to keep practicing the chords for the songs and be able to perform on the assessment day.

Set list:

  1. Lay Me Down
  2. For Good
  3. Fly Me To The Moon
  4. Skinny Love (Solo)
  5. Hallelujah
  6. Selfish
  7. Goodnight N Go

Wednesday 9th December 2020:

We just focused on incorporating little specifics during this time period that could help us build our ensemble diaries even better, so we spent the lesson just trying to refine it and hopefully being able to concentrate on the stuff we need to do so we can perfect it before the actual show.
And we had more growth in trying to refine our performance with the whole community so that we can be assured that we rehearsed each song to the point where it was understood so that the performance is fully edited and the performance is ready for evaluation.

Tuesday 15th December 2020:

I was able to project my voice enough so that the interviewer could hear my voice and be able to grade or evaluate my results. The overall assessment of my performance at the evaluation was okay. The aspects I should have improved about my performance are that I have more courage and more faith to hit the current notes and have a steady rhythm, so I will make mistakes while singing the wrong notes.
Since I was unable to regulate my nervous energy that I need to control to allow me next time to have a good performance or test.
